I don't know how it happened that I've never hiked Flat Laurel Creek before, but what a treat it was last weekend. The trail is a 7 mile in and out that mostly follows the creek passing numerous deep swimming holes. We encountered a group of ROTC students who were crossing the wire over the creek on belay and then unhooking and dropping in the water, which was fun to watch. One of the coaches warned us that on a different day we might encounter those Mars Hill "nakee hippies" which we got a big laugh out of.
The trail head is in Walnut ( near Marshall) and is only about a 40 minute drive from Asheville. We highly recommend it!
